Review the ESSA Level II study examining the relationship between consistent Newsela ELA use and spring 2023 Smarter Balanced ELA scores for California students in Grades 6–8.
Key findings
The study found statistically significantly higher spring 2023 SBA scores among students who consistently used Newsela ELA than among matched non-users.
The estimated difference was equivalent to moving from the 50th to the 54th percentile.
For Hispanic/Latino students, the estimated difference was equivalent to moving from the 50th to the 55th percentile.
Students in the consistent-use group engaged with Newsela ELA about twice a week on average during the 2022–23 school year.
The quasi-experimental study met ESSA Level II requirements for moderate evidence.
