Practice narrative writing and plot development with high-interest scary story lessons. Lead them through suspenseful storytelling techniques across eighty lessons, then submit their final pieces for a chance to be featured on Newsela and entered to win a $150 classroom party.

Scary Story Contest

  • Submit student story entries by email to creativewriting.contest@newsela.com by October 20.
  • Please include student stories as an attachment rather than in the body copy of the email.
  • To be considered, each entry must include:
    • Student name
    • Student grade
    • School district
    • Teacher's email address
  • A select number of top entires will be published on Newsela and our readers will vote on the top six winners, announced on November 2. Winners will receive a $150 gift card for their class party.

  • Submit a picture of your completed assignment or in-class activity via Google Form by October 30.
  • To be considered, each entry must include:
    • Teacher name
    • Students' grade level
    • School district
    • Teacher's email address
  • All participants are entered into a random drawing for the $150 gift card, with winners announced on November 2.
